Candlewood Lake was built in the late 1920's by the Connecticut Light and
Power Company and today is the biggest lake in Connecticut. It was built
by flooding rural farmland in the towns of Sherman, New Fairfield,
Danbury, Brookfield and New Milford. The purpose of the lake is to
generate electricity with water that is pumped from the Housatonic River.
During the night and early morning, water is drawn from the Housatonic
River while there is a surplus (low demand) of electricity. During the
daytime hours, especially during the summer, the Rocky River Power Plant
is put online and water is allowed to flow down Candlewood Mountain
through a large pipe. At the bottom of this pipe, turbines are spun from
the water power and electricity is generated. Up to 32,000 kilowatts can
be added to the power grid during peak demands from the water of Lake
Candlewood. These are some shots of the Northern part of Lake Candlewood. These were shot in the Lynn Deming Park area of New Milford, Connecticut. There is another set of newer photos available taken at the Dike Point Recreation Area of the lake. |

The collection of fall foliage pictures
shown on these pages were taken by me unless otherwise noted. Most shots
were taken in Litchfield County, Connecticut which is located in Central
and North Western Connecticut. During October, leafpeeping is my favorite
hobby as the trees change from green to red and yellow. |
