| Most manufacturers state the batteries in smoke
detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors should be changed twice per
year. Many fire officials agree that a good time to change the batteries is
during the annual time changes in the spring and fall. It's also a good idea
to test your alarms every month to insure they are working properly. |

| Batteries aren't the only thing that should be
checked in a smoke detector. Like many appliances, smoke detectors have a
limited lifetime. Many are rated for ten years, but the manufacturer's life
expectancy varies among different models. Many are stamped with a
manufacture date, but if they are exposed to environments where dust or
other elements accumulate on the sensors, the lifetime can be diminished. If
there are detectors approaching their life expectancy or they are exposed to
a harsh environment, it's a good idea to replace them.
Detectors should be placed on every floor of your home including the
basement with additional units in each bedroom near the door. It's also a
good idea to work on an escape plan in the event of a fire. Every member of
the household should be familiar with escape routes from different areas of
the house and everyone should have a common meeting area outside once
evacuated. A short discussion on your household plan can mean a big
difference in an emergency. It's important to remember 'never re-enter a
burning building'. Let trained fire personal respond. |

| Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless
gas that is produced whenever fuels such as oil, gas, wood, kerosene or even
charcoal is burnt. In properly working appliances the risk is minimal, but
if there are problems with the unit, CO gas can be produced and the results
can be deadly. Units that use these fuels should be checked annually. The
best way to protect against CO is by installing a CO Detector and making
sure it is working properly. |
